Stylized comedy pays

tribute to Stonewall

In celebration of Pride 1994, the Reality Theatre will present Street Theatre, a work honoring the 25th anniversary of the history making Stonewall riots.

Street Theatre is a stylized comedy set on June 27, 1969, the eve of the Stonewall Riots. Featuring a collection of gay cultural icons, the cast includes a leatherman bartender, undercover vice cop, street cruisers, a lesbian mechanic, the politically correct, drag queens and closet queens. Suddenly all are brought together in ways they never

expected, on a night which initiated global pride within the gay community. Written by Doric Wilson, the play skillfully traces the unlikely political alliances which led a group to realize they had nothing to lose by fighting back against the unjust abuse of society and the legal system.

Street Theatre opens June 2 at the Reality Theatre, 736 N. Pearl Street, Columbus, in the Short North Arts District, and runs through June 18. Call 614-294-7541 for ticket information and show times.

When there's no longer hope for a cure, make every day count. Call the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice to help you care for your terminally ill loved one.

Make mine the one with the clean-cut exterior

by Scott Hare

Show me a preppie, clean-cut, shorthaired man in a tie, and my libido perks up. Put a beard and leather, or dress and high heels on him, and things are not as perky. If you are attracted to leather or drag, you might believe that my attraction to the preppie type and lesser attraction to the other two is narrow-minded. But hopefully you'll stop to realize that just as I didn't choose to be attracted to men in general, I didn't choose to be more attracted to preppielooking men-it just sort of is the way it is.

I don't look down my nose at guys with long hair or beards or heels, and I don't feel superior. In fact, as a person who has faced

the risk of being the first to come out at work, and being on TV as an openly gay man, I have an appreciation of people being themselves and being honest about it. Actually, when you get beneath the exterior, personal honesty is what's really attractive. Part of that honesty, though, involves recognizing what exterior does appeal to you and dealing with it, and without shame. My partner's clean cut look is what initially attracted me to him. But, as our years together progress, he may develop different styles of expressing himself and his appearance, and because I love him and value him, I will have to deal with it (as long as I can get him in a suit once in awhile!).
